NATO member states and Ukraine have held an emergency meeting to discuss the ongoing heavy Russian bombing of Kyiv and the rest of the country.
Ukraine hopes for “joint steps” against Russia’s “escalating terror,” says Foreign Minister Andry Sybiha.
In recent days, Russia has again carried out massive drone and missile attacks. Among the targets were the EU embassy and a British government cultural institution in the Ukrainian capital. Kyiv says this demonstrates its “rejection of the peace efforts” being made by the US. Russia should be punished for continuing the war.
Ukraine is not a NATO member and is not permitted to become one by the US and other member states for the time being.
However, the partner country and aspiring member is granted a standing NATO-Ukraine Council, which it can convene if it feels threatened and wishes to request assistance. The ambassadors of the NATO countries will meet in this council on Monday.
