The United Kingdom is restoring diplomatic relations with the Syrian Arab Republic. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said this after a meeting with Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus.
“There is renewed hope for the Syrian people. The United Kingdom is restoring diplomatic relations because it is in our interest to support the new government in fulfilling their promise to build a stable, more secure and more prosperous future for all Syrians,” Lammy said in a statement.
The office of Al-Sharaa also stated that the two have discussed the ties between the two countries.
In December last year, dictator Assad was ousted from Syria, and his regime came to an end after thirteen years of civil war. Under the new ruler, Al-Sharaa, the country is seeking to rejoin the world stage.
The UK has lifted several sanctions against Syria in recent months. The US has also lifted sanctions against Syria.
