A 76-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of administering poison at a summer camp in England, resulting in eight children being hospitalised.

Police responded Monday to a report of children feeling unwell at the camp in the English village of Stathern, Leicestershire. A triage centre was set up in a nearby village hall, and eight children were taken to the hospital as a precaution. All have since been discharged, Leicestershire Police said.

The man was arrested at the scene and remains in custody on suspicion of administering poison or a harmful substance. Police have contacted the parents or guardians of the children who were taken to the hospital, they added.

“We understand the concern this incident has caused parents, guardians, and the community,” said Detective Inspector Neil Holden. “We are in contact with the parents and guardians of all children involved.

Rest assured, we have deployed various dedicated resources and are working with partner agencies, including Child Protective Services, to ensure the children involved are fully protected,” Holden added. “We also remain on scene to investigate the circumstances of what happened and to continue providing advice and support.”
